Yang Xun, Cheng Pei Yun and company will be performing Kurt Weill's Joukela Tango (Youkali Tango) (arranged by Ben Faes for double bass trio) in an upcoming chamber music concert, Miniatures, sponsored by ExxonMobil Campus Concerts and presented by NUS Symphony Orchestra. This will be one of the special occasions to listen to a double bass trio perform live in Singapore.
The double bass ensemble names itself BASSically. Based in Singapore, BASSically's vision is to inspire all music lovers in Singapore to experience and appreciate the versatility of the double bass.
Various ensembles from the NUS Symphony Orchestra will also be featured during Miniatures. Expect yourself to be treated to an array of short performances by strings quartet, wind quintet, percussion ensemble and more.
Arranged for three double basses by Ben Faes, Joukela Tango is based on an incidental music, Tango-Habanera, composed by Kurt Julian Weill (1900 - 1950) in 1934 for the play Marie Galante. The play was written by novelist and playwright, Jacques Deval. Despite the immediate popularity of some of its songs, the play itself was poorly received.
Subsequently, Tango-Habanera was set to the lyrics by Roger Fernay and the resultant song was issued by Heugel, Weill’s publisher in Paris, as Youkali in 1946.
Update, Feb 2014: BASSically has contacted and consulted Ben Faes. Please be informed that the title of the arrangement was intended to be Youkali Tango.
